Community Raku Firing

Saturday, February 21

4:00–6:00 PM

Demonstration by Deena Schuppe and Sally Brown.

You put glaze on a pot we provide and watch us fire it.
It takes half an hour in the kiln.
Deena or Sally will take the glowing red pot out with tongs
and drop it in a garbage can with sawdust to smoke.

What is Raku Pottery?

Raku pottery is created by a process originated in Japan:  pottery is fired at a relatively low temperature and then moved while hot to a closed container with combustible materials (like paper or sawdust) that ignite and cause a reaction creating colors and patterns in the pottery's surface.

Demonstration made possible
by a grant
from the La Pointe Center and the
Wisconsin Arts Board.
