Katherine Parfet

Painting Demo and Exhibition: Katherine Parfet

Katherine began her career as an artist in 1972 when she started a needlepoint design business, based originally in Minnesota. She specialized in custom work, and also created a signature line of over 300 designs, which is still distributed nationally. Needlepoint design work called for a lot of variety in subject matter, and a good understanding of shape, balance and color mixing. After retiring from the design business in 2000, she turned to painting full time, with acrylics as her medium.

Katherine's most recent work is based on memories she has of growing up in the Midwest, landscapes that represent the farm fields and lakes of northern Wisconsin. Her aim in each painting is to create a sense of place through color and simplicity of shape which evokes a feeling of stillness and calm.

Katherine's process involves working on three or four canvases at a time, setting them up separately on easels and painting quickly, moving from one painting to the next. She tries not to overthink or overwork the art, and in the process, hopes to create paintings that are loose and spontaneous. The result is a fresher style that has freed her up and moved her more towards abstraction and simplicity of form, which is her ultimate goal as a painter.
